KBHK-TV 44
San Francisco
KBHK-TV 44 never seemed to struggle for success as did KEMO-TV 20. They were more like KTVU 2 in that regard, and in their presentation of the channel as a competent, if somewhat bland, purveyor of pure entertainment.
In the late '60s and early '70s, KBHK-TV 44 did an admirable job of polluting the minds of youth with classic pop culture, filling the after-school hours with Warner Brothers and Fleischer Bros. cartoons, Three Stooges and Little Rascals shorts, and reruns of the 50s live-action Superman series, among other treasures.
KBHK-TV never got involved in the all-night movie wars with KNTV 11, KEMO-TV 20, KGSC-TV 36, and KTXL-TV 40, but they made up for it by airing double features from AIP's horror/SF library on Friday nights. For a while, they preceded the show with syndicated episodes of The Ghoul - the only time I can recall any local station programming a horror film triple feature in a repeating slot! The weekend's horror-show feasting was always started off right by KBHK-TV's Friday night lineup!
Saturday afternoons were also worthwhile on 44, being used as a rotating catch-all for various movie series and genre packages. During the mid-70s, KBHK-TV rediscovered 50s television, running classics of the era under the umbrella Festival Of Television for several summers in a row.
