The Ghoul

KBHK-TV 44, San Francisco
1972 (?) - 1973 (?)
8:00 pm Fridays

No doubt because Creature Features had made horror films and horror hosts hot in the local market, for a while KBHK-TV ramped up their unhosted Friday night AIP double feature by supplementing it with a third feature hosted by The Ghoul, syndicated from Cleveland. It was the only time I can recall a local channel scheduling three horror/SF films in a repeating slot. For the short time (less than a year) that The Ghoul ran on KBHK-TV, you could count on 5 straight hours of SF and horror on Friday nights.

The Ghoul (the name of both the host the show), was a hyperactive madman in a lab coat, a fright wig, and sunglasses with one lense missing. He liked to blow stuff up long before David Letterman, and made fun of Polish-American culture in ways which went way over the heads of we youthful Californians at the time. (We had to look up "kielbasa" to even know what he was talking about, much less actually get the joke.)

The Ghoul's pedigree traces back to the legendary Ghoulardi. We had no idea about that when he appeared on KBHK-TV. All we knew was that he came from some place named Parma, and had a "thing" for firecrackers and toy frogs.

The Ghoul is still on the air in the midwest, and has invaded the internet via TheGhoul.com.
