KCRA-TV 3, Sacramento
1960s - late '70s or early '80s (?)
Sign-off, 7 days a week
High Flight and Bluebird Of Happiness were not movie shows, but the two clips KCRA-TV 3 used as their sign-offs for years. At a time when other local stations signed off with patriotic or religious messages, KCRA-TV's clips were striking non-sequiturs.
High Flight consisted of shots of soaring jets set to John Gillespie Magee, Jr.'s poem. "Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings..." Apparantly, the High Flight sign-off film was not unique to KCRA-TV. Here's a short essay on the origin of the poem, with mention of "a local Washington TV station" using it as their sign-off. Wikipedia has a detailed entry on John Gillespie Magee and the poem's place in aviation culture.
Bluebird Of Happiness was a montage of Alpine nature scenery set to the song by tenor Jan Peerce. (Although I always thought it sounded like Paul Frees parodying a Bavarian folk singer.) "The beggar man, and the mighty king, are only different in name, for they are treated just the same... by fate!"
Both clips were forever burned into my memory by repeated viewings in a state of sleep deprivation. It became a point of honor to stay up late enough to see KCRA-TV's sign-offs. Friday and Saturday nights felt unfinished somehow if I didn't see KCRA sign off.
You probably never expected to see these again, but here they are on YouTube. This version is from the early 80s, I think. The early 70s version of High Flight has 60s-era planes in it, and different music.
