Friday Night Frights

KICU-TV 36 (formerly KGSC), San Jose
198? - 19??
11:00 pm Fridays

Friday Night Frights may have been the last regular local horror movie programming in the Bay Area - my tape is from March of 1989. Everything I know about it comes from a VHS copy of LAST MAN ON EARTH inherited from the collection of a high school friend.

Although the show has no host, it does have an announcer who sounds suspiciously like Gary Ferry, AKA Ga3ry (the 3 is silent) of MMM Carpets, doing a broad Lugosi accent.

The announcer acted like a horror host in every way but actually appearing on camera - making jokes about the movie during the breaks, and also plugging the next week's double feature. From this it is tempting to wonder if the show was at some point proposed as a venue for a host. It isn't all that unlikely, even so late in the game for local shows. James Gabbert was still hosting the Sunday all-night movies over on KOFY-TV at that time, and cable shows such as USA's Night Flight, Saturday Nightmares and USA Up All Night were going strong, or only recently demised.

And now, in my first awkward attempt to bring video to UHF Nocturne, here's a link to a brief Quicktime of the second bumper from my tape of Friday Night Frights. Let me know if it doesn't work, as this is a test for future additions to the site.
