The Bob Wilkins
Horror Show

KTXL-TV 40, Sacramento
1971 - 1982
Varying times after 10:00 pm, Saturdays

After leaving KCRA, Bob Wilkins hosted this late Saturday night horror show on KTXL concurrently with the run of Creature Features on KTVU. It started later than Creature Features. The agonizing decision of which version to watch was made more difficult by trying to guess on which channel Bob was likely to be funnier that week. KTXL had the better film package, with all sorts of obscure European and British horror films.

UHF Nocturne correspondant and former valley resident Perry Martin remembers Wilkins on 40 way better than I do:

When Wilkins moved to KTXL, replacing Black Museum, he inherited the station's Shock Theater package -- and for the first time began showing classic horror films. His first movie here may well have been FRANKENSTEIN (1931), but I'm not sure.

The new show's format remained pretty much identical to 7 Arts Theater. For its first year or so, it opened with a close-up of a poster-sized cartoon, which changed every week and usually satirized that night's movie. (For example, for FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN, the cartoon depicted a close-up of the two monsters shaking hands -- and the words "Made in Japan" imprinted on Frankenstein's wrist.) Over this shot, Bob's trademark music, which he brought over from 7 Arts Theater, began playing. The camera then pulled back, revealing Wilkins seated in his rocking chair and smoking his trademark cigar.

Eventually, the cartoons were dropped and replaced by a sign -- The Bob Wilkins Horror Show. Initially, the set was a simple platform and chairs with a dark background; eventually, the background became flats decorated with a collage of horror movie posters. The theme music remained the same for the show's duration.

THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z has been issued by Mondo Macabro USA. VCI have put out a terrific transfer of my favorite Giallo, BLOOD AND BLACK LACE. PYRO and HORROR HOTEL are both available on DVD from Troma Studios. (HORROR HOTEL has been issued by more than one company. The best version is the one sold by Troma on their Roan label.)
